About Topic: A talk about how the amature community networking filled the widening gap of broadband needs and availability in the local Paksitani market, gained financial muscle and how it is now here to stay and the obvious needs to bring some minimum formality to the sector.

Tariq Mustafa has been associated with the Internet industry in Pakistan since its inception. He has served for over a decade in the technical domains of various Internet and telecommunication companies in Pakistan including Supernet, Telecard, Instaphone and Multinet. His passions include local ICT community development, and mysticism. Tariq is a hobby technology journalist , blogs about technology and the city of Karachi.

APNIC Day : 18 January 2008

In conjunction with SANOG 11, APNIC will be conducting a full day
seminar and discussion focusing on

*"IPv4 exhaustion: is the Internet in Crisis ?"*

As IPv4 address space depletes, the Internet is facing a potential
crisis in dealing with this situation. The objective of this seminar
will be to consider the issues arising from this and to provide a
comprehensive understanding of the context in which this is occurring.

The seminar program will include:

Presentations and tutorials to:

- look at the broad picture of Internet address management.

-understand the nature of the policies governing IP address space
management and how the South Asian community can become involved in
developing these policies.

-understand how addresses are currently allocated and assigned and the
processes involved.

- Understand the current state of IPv4 and related policies being
discussed. (for example, how should the remaining IPv4 blocks be
distributed?) We hope this to be an interactive session and actually
look at these policy proposals.

IPv6 Overview

Since IPv6 is currently considered the best (and only real) long term
solution for surviving the IPv4 crisis, the day will also include a
brief overview of IPv6 and its operation.

Forum and Panel discussion

Finally, a major part of the afternoon will be a forum presentation and
panel discussion looking at the issues, concerns and perhaps actions
that can address these problems. Local experts and others will
participate in the panel and audience involvement will be keenly
encouraged.
