Peering and Network Deployment at 10Gig - Nigel Titley
Nigel Titley has been involved with data networks and especially IP networks since the early days of the Internet. One of the architects of British Telecom's first commercial internet offering, he moved on to help operate it. When the .com explosion hit Europe he moved to Level 3 and helped build their Europe-wide network, specialising in the application servers that delivered email, DNS and NTP. Nigel made IP peering his speciality, linking together ISPs to improve performance and reduce costs, and this remains his main function today. After Level 3, Nigel worked as the peering co-ordinator for FLAG telecom. For the last two years, he has been the main network architect at Easynet and as the peering co-ordinator building the 10Gig peering backbone in Europe and the US.
Nigel has served on the boards of the London Internet Exchange and was honored by LINX as "A Conspicuous Contributor". He has also served multiple times on the board of the RIPE NCC , and is current the chairman of the Executive Board. Nigel has spoken at various conferences worldwide as well as previous SANOGs.
Building Wireless Network in the Mountains - Dr. Mahabir Pun
Dr. Mahabir Pun first dreamed of connecting his village of Nangi to the internet in 1997, and has been working ever since to bring the internet to rural Nepal. Mahabir was born in Nangi, and completed his primary education there. After working as a teacher for several years, he completed a master's degree in education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Mahabir has constructed computer labs at several schools in the area and planned out the entire Nepal Wireless network. The network now encompasses twenty two remote villages in Myagdi. He has also helped build other simillar networks in other parts of Nepal. He plans to to continue to expand access in the future.
Mahabir Pun was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award 2007 for Community Leadership (http://www.rmaf.org.ph/Awardees/Citation/CitationPunMah.htm) in 2007. The Ramon Magsaysay awards are considered the most prestigious awards in Asia.
About SANOG XII
SANOG XII is being hosted in Kathmandu for the third time, after a gap of four years. This is the only major International networking technologies event in Nepal. During this SANOG, a special meeting of regional Research and Education Networks will be organized, thereby increasing the scope of the event significantly. Kathmandu has easier access to most of the region, and no visas are required for people from the SANOG region, making it one of the most popular SANOG Venues over the years.
